Service line 08

Dermatology without the waiting room

Aging skin is fragile, slow to heal, and easy to under-examine. Our dermatology clinicians round in the building, look at the whole patient, biopsy what needs a biopsy, and treat the rashes and infections that otherwise cycle through the unit.

What we treat

Dermatology covers a wide range

Every referral is assessed on its own merits. If a resident needs a different specialty or a higher level of care, we say so plainly.

Conditions we manage

  • Skin cancer screening and suspicious lesions
  • Actinic keratoses
  • Eczema and dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Fungal skin infections
  • Scabies and other infestations
  • Drug eruptions and unexplained rashes
  • Chronic itch and dry skin
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Bullous and blistering conditions
At the bedside

What we do at the bedside

What the clinician actually does in the room.

Full skin examination

Head-to-toe review documented with lesion locations, so changes can be tracked at the next visit.

Biopsy at the bedside

Shave and punch biopsies performed in the room, with pathology followed up and results returned to the chart.

Cryotherapy

Treatment of precancerous and benign lesions without an outside appointment.

Rash and drug-reaction workup

A medication review alongside the exam, because many late-life rashes start in the medication list.

Infestation management

Diagnosis and treatment of scabies, with guidance for your infection-control team when it spreads.

Chronic skin disease

Ongoing management of psoriasis, eczema and itch, with a plan your aides can follow.

Wound line hand-off

Ulcers and non-healing wounds move to our wound care team without a second referral.

Care pathway

How a dermatology referral moves

Sequential by design — every step is a hand-off with a named owner, so nothing sits waiting for someone to notice it.

  • 1

    Referral

From nursing, the attending, or a skin check that turned up something new.

  • 2

    Bedside evaluation

Full skin exam, history and medication review in the room.

  • 3

    Procedures

Biopsies and cryotherapy performed during the visit where indicated.

  • 4

    Treatment plan

Topical and systemic treatment written to your chart with clear instructions for staff.

  • 5

    Results and follow-up

Pathology results reviewed and acted on, with excision or oncology referral arranged when needed.

Skin findings are often first noticed by the aide at bath time. A dermatology round gives that observation somewhere to go.
